Family Roots
If Family Roots™ can't find your data, then this FAQ will lead you through the steps that should solve that problem.

Updated November 2012

If you haven't yet read the overview, please do so before continuing.

Your files will be like this (using my own names as an example)

c:\fr4\
	has the main program
c:\fr4\kathryn\
	has controls.1, namelist.1, family.1 for my family

In FR, from the File menu, I see:
+---------------------------+
¦ [] File ¦
¦---------------------------¦
¦Select Family from Menu.. ¦
¦Add Family to Menu ¦
¦Delete Family from Menu.. ¦
¦---------------------------¦

If you don't see the name of the "family" on the main screen, then "select" a family. If there are none to select, then "add" the family first. This is just the name that is used to identify a family, mostly for people who have more than one database (like I do with multiple clients), so you can use your mother's name or even Data. The important part comes when it asks the location of the family's data - use the path to where you have the data stored. Then "select" the family and it will now be on the main screen.

+------------------------+
¦ [] Select a family ¦
¦------------------------¦
¦Kathryn ¦
¦Marilyn ¦
¦NEvins ¦

If you have everything in it's proper place and are still are getting data image not found, then get out of FR, go to your dos prompt (Start > Programs > MS-Dos Prompt) and type:
cd c:\fr4
then type:
frmgr
That will put you in the manager part of FR.
Under Computer, choose Set Disk Drives & Paths and make sure that items B through F below are set correctly depending on the family. Mine, for example:

+-------------------------------------------------------
¦ [] Change Disk Drives and Paths Parame
¦ ------------------------------------------------------
¦Select by highlight or letter
¦A) HARD DISK DRIVE [Yes] P) CAPACITY OF
¦B) PATH FOR FAMILY [d:\FR4\Kathryn\] Q) DATA FLOPPY
¦C) PATH FOR DATA [d:\FR4\Kathryn\] R) CAPACITY OF
¦D) PATH FOR JUNK [d:\FR4\Kathryn\Jun*] S) DATA FLOPPY
¦E) PATH FOR STORIES [d:\FR4\Kathryn\*] T) CAPACITY OF
¦
¦F) PATH FOR GEDCOMS [d:\FR4\KATHRYN\] U) DRIVE FOR PR

Then you want to save the configuration file *twice*.
               +--------------------+
Path or Drive: ¦d:\FR4\Kathryn\ ¦
               +--------------------+
               +--------------------+
    File Name: ¦CONFIG4.DAT ¦
               +--------------------+
then save it again, but this time
               +--------------------+
Path or Drive: ¦d:\FR4\ ¦
               +--------------------+
               +--------------------+
    File Name: ¦CONFIG4.DAT ¦
               +--------------------+

then exit FR and type fr and see if it works. If so, then change to a different family and see if it works, if not, then exit FR and repeat the frmgr part to set the path for that family.

When you are all done you should be able to change from one family to another and be able to read that family's data. If you are successful, then you can exit FR, type exit to get back to windows, and you are set.
