WALLER HARRELL is one of the oldest residents now living in Jackson County, having come here with his parents in 1815 and settled in the southern part of Driftwood Township. He was born in 1811, near Bardstown, Ky. His father, Isaac, and his mother, Elizabeth (Watkins) Harrell, came to Kentucky from Virginia, and afterward to Indiana. They were of that sturdy enterprising element of Virginia who westward took their way and planted the future homes for their posterity in the Northwest Territory. They bequeathed to their children, as well, habits of frugality and industry, which our subject inherited abundantly. He began as a farmer and is now the owner of 800 acres of well-improved land. He has been intrusted by his neighbors with the administration of decedents' estates more or less all his life. He has never been in office, only as trustee of his township for a term of four years. February 5, 1835, he was married to Miss Julia A. Blockwood, who died in 1846. To them were born six children: Kalista A., Manderville, Ira B., James I., Josephine and Elizabeth. Mrs. Harrell was the daughter of James Blockwood, who came from North Carolina. In July, 1847, he was again married to Esther C. Knight, daughter of Israel Knight. To them were born three children: Hattie K., Louisa, and one dying in infancy. Mr. Harrel is a member of the Christian Church. He is a Republican in politics and is one of the leading men in his township. |
