| Biography |
|
Tyler County History Book says: On March 23, 1812 William and Hannah and three children-Martha, Elizabeth and Wells, came to live in a log house on a high knoll along McElroy Creek. Six more children: Ellis, John, William H., Leah, James C. and Samuel A. were born to them. Later, two more sons, Zane and Notley W. were born (after William Sr. built the new brick house). All of this was in Tyler County, WV. Later (page 481) William Underwood and Hannah Willis were both born in 1780 and married in 1805. They came from Delaware with a party of surveyors, under a commission with the Governor of Virginia. William was appointed Constable of the McElroy district, in 1812 he was granted 2000acres of land on McElroy . He was appointed Captain of the Virginia militia in the same year. In 1815 he was made Justice of the Peace in Tyler County and held that office for 37 years. In 1817 he was Coroner. In 1822-1828-1842 and 1849 he was appointed Sheriff of Tyler County. In 1849 he was made adjunct in the 123rd regiment of the Virginia militia. He died in 1866. There's a picture of he and Hannah in the book. There is an Isaac who is the brother of Mary, whose probate record is in Fiduciary book 2 pgs 215 thru 240 & pgs 547 & 548 with many of the correct names. I copied pgs 547 & 548, but not the rest which is the inventory. Some of the pertinent names who owe notes to estate are: James Ferrell, Jacob Yeater, Freeman Smith, Thomas & Barnes Swiger, Thomas Ash, Asa Kile; and the following Underwoods: David, Isaiah, S., John G., Sol (probably Solomon), Joseph, and Freeman. Lots more. Estate starts 27 Oct 1876. This paragraph is duplicated in his actual record, but included in father's record to differentiate the two Isaacs. |
