The entry states that Jacob left a son Isaac who is 21. Eli petitioned the court to sell Jacob's real esate and James Groenendike, Samuel Moffitt and Jacob Troxell were appointed appraisers of the real estate, which was purchased by Robert Beatty. At the time of the sale Nancy one of the wards had reached 21 and had disposed of her interest in this real estate. The guardian also states that he has learned that Thomas was a post humous child of Jacob and not mentioned in his will. The ward Jane was later listed as the wife of Nathan Macy. The court asked Eli to invest the money of five of his wards in 80 acres each of Congress Land and he reported that he bought land for them in sections 19 and 20, township 20, range 8, at $100. for each 80 acres. | To-Do | Look for death info, marriage info, anything to track him. He probably had more children too. Email with Diane McGee >>> I am working on the Kiple history and funny that you should have two names for Nicolas' wife, because I have two names for Catherine's husband. However, in Catherine's father's will, written in 1794, Catherine was married to Nicolas.<<< Well, that at least gives me some confirmation of her being a spouse. >>> Evidently he did not like Nicolas because he left 100 pounds to her but she was not to receive it for 50 years unless Nicolas departed before the time expired. However, when the Will was executed in 1797, she received the 100 pounds. That is why I had asked about his death date, which from your information was in 1808. Could they have seperated and married others.<<< Since it's been a while, I don't know where that death date came from. He could have died earlier or later, or they could have been seperated or divorced as you suggest. Definitely gives me something to think about as I search - wouldn't be the first divorce I've found. >>> If I read your chart right that would mean that Nicolas and Catherine had a son James born in 1770.<<< Yes, the *year* is correct, and James married in 1797. However, I don't know who is mother was. See my comment a few paragraphs down. >>> The earliest records we have of the Kiple's are 1780 so that doesn't seem likely. I would rather think that each of them were married before they married each other, as Catherine was suppose to have had a son George by the other name I have for her husband.<<< Which is ...? >>> It does not mean that the Kiple's could not have been in New Jersey in 1770 but if they did have a son in 1770 and were still married in 1794, for sure, because of the Will, it seems unlikely that she would have remarried after that and had another child. If I am not making any since I am writing as my mind is functioning. Let me know what you think of this theory.<<< I think this theory is a good one. Theory: Nicholas first marr to Violette Story and had James in 1770. Later married your Elizabeth who was also previously married. Makes good sense! Would you send me paper copies of whatever you have on Elizabeth - her father's will, family group with her as child (for siblings etc), and family group for her and her other husband. This info will put things into perspective for me while I do my searches in SLC. I have a subscription to the Ancestry.com databases and there isn't anything of help there, but once you give me name of her other husband, maybe something will pop up on his name. | |
| Birth | 30 March 1749 | Kingston, Somerset Co., New Jersey |
| Marriage | (__________) (__________); Wife possibly Violette Story or Catherine Kiple (Kyple) per Howard G (evd 1273 pg 36) but needs further research as he has quite a few errors. He said that Violette Story (dau of John Story and Mary ___) is first wife, and Catherine Kiple (Kyple), dau of John Kiple Sr of Amwell Twn, Hunt Co NJ, is the 2nd wife. "In inv. of John Story 1802 is mentioned dtr Lidyas son Richard and dtr Sara and wife Mary. Since Nicholas had dtr Sara and son Richard it is to be presumed that John Story's wife was Lidyas. Also could John Story Gorendyke have derived his name from this source. Will of John Story Gorendyke 1806 mentions dtr Violettes Groendyke two children (NJ Archives Vol 22 pg 361 mort. Hunt. Co. Vol 1 p 497) | |
| Residence | 1785 | Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey, His father's will gives him "all that lot of land in Kingwood where he now lives" (that is Kingwood, not Kingston) |
| Death | February 1808 | I have no proof of death date. If he died in the 18teens, then he could have died in Indiana where his son moved. Utterback 1942 letter says that Nicholas was a ship captain who was lost at sea while on a whaling expedition in the South Seas, and that son James was left an orphan & brought up in the home of his uncle John (Johannis). If this is true, then it may explain why I thought John was his father. |

| Marriage | 25 August 1744 | Johannis "John" Groendyke; Probably?, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, Howard Groendyke said "Recorded in records of church of 3 mile Run and 6 Mile Run as having lived in that vicinity during period 1720-1748. In Hunterdon & Somerset Co by James P Snell (1881) it is stated that he lived 6 Mile Run in 1753". Maybe the church records have the marriage? He remained in Long Island, at Gravesend, and became head of the Gravesend family there. He probably lived for a time at Flatlands, for November 21, 1670, he bought a horse of James Hubbard of Gravesend. He is named in the assessment roll of Gravesend in 1683. In 1700 he was Captain of Militia. In 1694 he bought of Hannah, widow of John Delavall of Pennsylvania, for 164 pounds a house and forty acres of land on Hogg's Neck in Gravesend. May 6, 1696, he with Joakim Gulick, had a survey of 85 acres at Smoking Point, with nine acres at the mouth of the Fresh Kil, on Staten Island. In 1714 he was an elder in the Gravesend Dutch Reformed Church, but the date of his death has not been found. His will was proven May 17, 1729. | |
