| Sources | Great grandson Jasper believed he was of Scotch Irish stock "who came to this country in an early year apparantly landing in PA, one branch of family going west to OH River near Pittsburgh, other branch going to VA then WV. Though this sounds like the usual "3 brothers going in diffent directions" theory, it is very likely true in this case. DNA tests of Kathryn Kyle Hall's brother shows a positive (25/25 match) between their line and Josiah Kile b. 1812 Pickaway Co., OHio and 36/37 match between James Kyle of County Tyrone, Ireland andher line. A branch on the OH River near Pittsburgh, would very easily have gone into southern Ohio, so this would be the clue to that Pickaway group. | |
| Note | Robert Kile-Coyle; DNA - Kathryn Kyle Hall's cousin Karl participated in DNA testing, and she said the test results came back on a Virginia man named Chris Kile. He and Kathryn's cousin do not match. Chris's great uncle was Orville Kile who wrote the Kile/Coil book. His research shows he is descended from Robert Kile, brother of James Kile #2. Kathryn goes on to say: There are 3 mutations or variations so the odds of us being related are minimal. So there are only a couple of possibilities - His research is wrong - my research is wrong. The DNA tests show a positive (25/25 match) between my line and Josiah Kile b. 1812 Pickaway Co., OHio and 36/37 match between James Kyle of County Tyrone, Ireland and my line. I guess the best thing now is to try to prove who Josiah's parents were and keep going back in time till I find where my line and his meet. With the one mutation, I will probably find that my line joins with the County Tyrone line back in Ireland, although the mutation is on a fast changing marker, so that could mean we could match over here with a common ancestor. He sent me his research, but I don't see how we fit into his line. And Josiah's parentage is a brick wall. I have hired two researchers in the past few months to go through records in Pickaway and they have found nothing on who his parents were. There was one comment in a county history book that said Josiah's sister's father was William Kile. LDS records also show a Joseph and a James as his father. Just when you thought you had your ancestors all nailed down, along comes a DNA test and stirs them all up again. Back to ye olde drawing board. DNA chart can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~firebird/ftdna041204.htm If anyone reading this on the web has any information on a Josiah Kile, b. 1812 Pickaway Co, with a sister Isabel, b. 1818 who married John Woolington, let us know. Later correspondance from Kathryn Kyle Hall: Orville Kile's book shows Robert as having a son William. This is - I believe- in error. That William Kile Sr., died in 1815 from cold plague, as did his wife and son William Jr. Chancery court records - Hampshire Co - p. 62 - 12 July 1813 - the heirs of Robert Kyle, deceased, are bringing suit against the widow and heirs of James Kyle (my James(2) and Robert was the executor of James' estate for return of money - the signatures for the suit - John and Frances Kile Stewart William and Catherine Kile Stage Robert Kile Rebeccah Kile John Kyle Anna Kyle Thomas Kyle Margery Kile Elizabeth Kile James Kile Matilda Daniel Kile Robert's widow, Hannah, signed for the minor children. There are 12 names - in the land records from 1817 through 1844, these same 12 names appear - and they say - selling my 1/12th part - nowhere is there the name of William Kile. That would explain why Chris Kile's DNA did not match our line of DNA. He descends from William Kile, Sr. We could not figure out why his DNA did not match ours - now we know - William Sr was NOT a son of Robert. Witness: Josiah Kile | |

| Marriage | 23 December 1802 | Sarah Freehafar; Frederick Co., Virginia, Frederick County Virginia Marriages 1771-1825 Complied & Edited by Eliza Timberlake Davis 1941 (SLC 6019214) pg 46 (spelled Freefar) On same page is Frederick Kyle/Ann Mauck 23 Jul 1803. Related? Note that there are no other people named Freefar. However, there are a lot of people named Freehafer, mainly from PA, so that is the likely spelling of her name. When next in SLC, look at film 31456 to get copy of the original record to do my own interpretation of the spelling of the name. |
| Will | Have copy of will (Evd 1307), admitted Feb 1806, which mentions James, Robert, William, Abraham, Isaac, "other 8 children", and brother Robert who was adm of estate. Wife not mentioned. (why was land not mentioned?). He lastly names his daughter Sarah to be taken care of by his brother and executor Robert. the others are to be bound out to some good trade. Kathryn Hall says: I take it then, that these 7 boys are under age - minors. (Or were there 8 boys plus daughter Sarah). From marriage and land records, I put in the names of those whom I believe these 7 to be. All subject to change. His will was admitted 25 Arp 1806 - Ezekiel Marple was one of the securities of the will with $4,000 bond. I wonder if James had wife #1 for the first 5 children whom he names individually in his will, then the other 8 children by wife #2, then wife #3 would be Sarah freefar, by whom he had no children, as indicated by her resigning all rights to her dower claim. If she had any children, she would not renouce her claim. Also, his will does not mention a wife. So, why in his will didn't he leave the land to someone? Even if this land was bought by his father, James #1, the land isn't mentioned in either will. (Kathryn Bassett note - in that time period, land automatically went to the oldest son, and didn't need mentioning in land or probate records) | |

| Pension | 4 April 1837 | Monroe Co., Ohio, Pension extract - James S Ferrell File S7697. State of Ohio, Monroe Co. 4th Day of April, 1837 - in order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832, personally appeared in open court before the judges of the court of common pleas, James S Ferrell, a resident of Ohio Township in said county of Monroe and State of Ohio, aged 73 years, and made the following statement under oath: He entered the service of the US in the month of May 1779, being a little upwards of 16 years of age. He entered the militia as a voluntter in Capt. David Scott's company of VA Militia, Lt Tipton, Ensign Butler and Bazel Proctor, who was also a Lt and Col Mackintosh commander of the reg. Before he entered the service, he lived on the spot where Morgantown now stands in Monongalia County VA. He entered for 3 months but was detained much longer. The troops rendevouzed at Fort Pitt and marched down the Ohio River to the site of Fort Mackintosh, which fort they built. This fort consisted of 4 log houses 18 ft sq on each side, 16 in all and the angles at the corners were secured by stockades. He remained there 3 months and then a detachment under Lt Tipton, declarant being one of the number, marched in the night from Fort Mackintosh, crossed the river in bark canoes and arrived at Wheeling Fort some time the next night and garrisoned that fort until late in the month of December following, having been detained until other levies could be procured and was dismissed after the termination of 8 months, and then returned home. That the troops in frontier service did not always receive written discharges as the declarant believes many of the officers could not write. Afterwards, he thinks it was in the month of April 1780, or could have been in 1781, he enlisted in the company of his father, Capt. Robert Ferrel for one year at a blockhouse where Morgantown now stands, with Lt Murphy and Ensign Uriah Springer. They went down the Monongalia and Ohio Rivers to the mouth of Bear Grass Creek, built a fort on the same side of the river called Fort Defiance. This was just above the great falls of the Ohio. Soon after their arrival at the Fort Defiance, Gen Clark, the commanding officer went away, declarant cannot tell what became of him except that he left the troops to themselves. About the time Clark left, a man came up and hitched his horse near where the troops were parading. The Indians fire out of the neighboring candbrake and shot im through the ear. The troops went in pursuit and searched the canebrake, but found none of them. On the same day the Indians fired on 6 men in a boat at the mouth of Bear Grass Creek and killed them. One of these was Capt. Tipton. On the next day, Capt Ferrell moved his men across the Ohio and built a blockhouse on Bear Grass Creek. Capt Ferrll soon after sent a detachment of 200 men, declarant among them, to relieve the settlers for about 10 miles off and bring away the settlers who were greatly harrassed by the savages. They brought away the settlers who had taken refuge at the fort. Some time after this the troops were dismissed and the declarant and his father, Capt. Ferrel, returned home to the place where Morgantown now stands. At this time the declarant was in the service 7 months and received no written discharge and believes that none of the troops received written discharges. Afterward in May 1782, although it could have been in 1781, he enlisted as a volunteer during the campaign in the company of his father, Capt. Robt. Ferrel at the blockhouse where Morgantown now stands in Monongalia County VA where the troops under General Crawford rendevouzed. The company under Capt. Ferrel, to which this declarant belonged, joined Col. Crawford's army in which Col. John Dark was an officer. They went down the Ohio River in batteaux to the mouth of Big Beaver and then proceeded by land to the head waters of the Big Sandusky and there in themonth of July of the same years theyw ere met and attacked by Indians. He thinks it was in the 3rd night after the army had been attacked by the Indians Capt. Ferrel, being officer of the day, came riding into the encampment just before day-break and stated to Col. Crawford that the encampment was surrounded by Indians concluding his statement with this expression "Every man for himself and God for us all." Shortly thereafter this, the Indians fired upon the army on all sides and the troops immediately fled in confusion, every man seeking his own safety. Soon after, this declarant had his horse shot from under him and he ran on foot until next morning when finding a horse, he mounted him. This declarant travelled on through the wilderness in company with Capt. Ferrel and a few others sibsisting on such gave as chance offered. After enduring great hardship and distress they arrived at Fort Pitt. He and his father, Capt. Ferrel, went immediately home to where Morgantown now stands. He arrived home in Sept. of the last mentioned year having been absent 4 months from the time of his joining Col. Crawford's army. He risided for about 10 years near where Morgnatown now stands, and then removed to Ohio Township in Monroe Co., State of Ohio where he has since lived. He states he was born in Berkeley Co., Virginia where Winchester now stands on the 14 of April, 1763. He has a record of his age in his family Bible taken from the register of Dr Morgan an Episcopal minister in the then berkeley Co. VA. This declarant states the names of Rev. Rezin White and Robert Longwell who are acquainted with him in his present neighborhood who can testify to his character for veracity and their belief of his service as a soldier of the Revolution. /s/ James S. Ferrel /a/ James Gray, Deputy Clerk There is an affidavit signed by the character references, and a 17 Sep 1838 statement by James as to why it took so long to apply for the pension (3 people had been engaged to help and didn't). Then there is the following statement made when he moved to Tyler Co WV. County of Ohio, State of Virginia On the 18th day of December, 1838, before George Dulty, Justice of the Peace, appeared James S. Ferrel, who stated that his name was placed on the pension roll of the State of Ohio (Cincinnati) from when he has lately removed and that he now resides in Tyler Co. VA where he intends to remain and wished his pension to be payable to him there in the future. His reason for moving from Monroe Co OH to Tyler Co VA is his desire to spend the remainder of his life with his son who resides in Tyler Co. /s/ James S. Ferrel, John B. | Event-Misc | William Ankrom; Robert Speece is desended from William Ankrom and Mary Elizabeth Howell. In 2006, he is 85 years old. In 1965, he took a photo of the log house of Jacob Lewis (the young people in photo are his children). The next time he was on Sheet's Run was in 1975 by which time the log house was gone. All that remained of William Ankrom's log house was pile of some chimney stones. The properties in the area had been purchased for back taxes and the log houses had been removed from the area, some to be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere. Robert said that prior to 1965, the last time he was on Sheet's Run was 1938 just before he entered the Marine Corp. At that time, Jacob Lewis' log house was owned and occupied by Maggie Greenwalt who acquired it in 1905 through her father's will. She was 75 and living alone as she always had. Her father, John T Greenwalt had purchased it from Levi Steed, who acquired it from Abraham Howell, William Ankrom's fatherinlaw. It was from Jacob Lewis' house that William Ankrom's brotherinlaw went off to the Civil War never to return from Andersonville. William Ankrom purchased 50 acres on the south side of Sheets Run along Cedar Run and for awhile lived in a house there which he later gave to a daughter. Meanwhile, he purchased from a man named Morgan, one acre on the north side of Sheets Run. In the deed for the one acre, the deed refers to the parcel as "formerly the Sheets Run School House". With the Jacob Lewis house only 100 yards away and all those kids, is it possible that some of them went to school in the Sheets Run School House? TO DO on the 2006 WV trip how/when did Howel get land from Jacob? trace Ankrom's one acre in deed books take current pictures of the area1 | |

| Story | This is my proof that Jacob LEWIS, my ancestor code 126; and Jacob Lewis COFFENBERRY, son of immigrant George Ludwig Coffenberry; are one and the same person. Two independant sources indicate someone who dropped the Coffenberry and went by Lewis. One source is from the Coffenberry genealogy book written by Beatrice Scott which says "It has been the impression among relatives in Cleveland Ohio that ... one changed his last name to Lewis." She also quotes a 1927 letter from Arthur S Coffinberry of Lakewood Ohio "I have heard my father say that a certain Senator Lewis of West Virginia was supposed to have been a descendant." The other name change source is a 1940 letter (Evd 108) that I have that was written by the granddaughter of Rachel Lewis, who was the granddaughter of Jacob Lewis aka Coffenberry. The letter in part says "Mima was under the impression that Grandmother (Rachel) was a Parker. But she wasn't. Her father's name was Lewis Coffenberry and I believe it was Jacob Lewis Coffenberry. I'm not quite sure about the Jacob, anyway the whole family went by name of Lewis instead of Coffenberry." ... "it might be that great grandmother was married to a Parker before or after the Coffenberry." The reference to Parker was because Rachel's mother was a Parker per the pension. Jacob LEWIS was born 1755 in Berkeley Co WV (see pension) where immigrant George Ludwig's children were born at that time period. By his 1816 second marriage he was in Tyler Co WV. Jacob Lewis COFFENBERRY & his sister Catherine (relic of Henry Young) were in Ohio Co WV (next to Tyler Co) in 1814 according to Berkeley Co deed book 21 pg 221a (Evd 1329) when they appointed Salathiel Curtis (who was son of James Curtis in next paragraph) to get their share of inheritance from their father's estate. Jacob LEWIS had a brother-in-law named James Curtis who lived in Berkeley Co at the time of the Rev (see pension) and was now residing in Ohio Co, and Jacob Lewis COFFENBERRY also had a brother-in-law named James Curtis who was in Berkeley Co. There is no evidence to suggest that there was more than one James Curtis in Berkeley Co at that time period. This along with the two independent sources regarding a name change are compelling evidence to support their being the same person. A 1940 letter that I have (Evd 108) says that he lived in Sheets Run, Tyler, West Virginia as does his will. The land was sold in 1845 by Rachel & husband Eli Ferrell, Catherine, John, and Jane & husband John Weekley. The 1940 letter in part says ... "two sisters, one married a Weekley, the other a Buckhannon" ... "There is one person living who might know more than this and that is Marvin Nichols grandson of Aunt Jane Weekley ... Marvin's mother was Rachel Weekley Nichols". The other interesting thing that needs to be found out - why did the family only know about the 3 youngest girls, and why are the first 8 children virtually disinherited with only $1 each? Was it because they were already of age? I need to do further tracking of those 8 kids.2 | |

Important surnames on same ship: Bauer, Ultsch, Voght, Wiese, Fischer, Henig, Jahn/Hahn, Moyer. The Queen of Denmark, 1752, Capt. Register of clergy & schoolteachers in Starkenberg 1521-1923 film 415526 #2 doesn't show Hinrich Burchard Gabriel Wormann, the Lutheran minister on the ship w/Johann Georg Reinhardt. Lead: on the next sailing of the Queen of Denmark (11 Sep 1753), Johannes Dingler (another person I'm interested in) came from Dagersheim, Pflaz, Germany. The Queen of Denmark only sailed 3 times, where were others from? Is that a clue? |
