He(r)man A Bassett; Proof that Oliver Harmon Bassett and Heman Bassett are brothers, and the sons of Samuel Chipman Bassett: We have proof (by DNA) that He(r)man who married 1) Englebert & 2) Mary Chambers is one of the two son's by Anna Harmon. Oliver Harmon Bassett's daughter Semira specifically says that her mother married her father's brother Herman. It is interesting to note that someone else also had Lucy married to both Oliver Harmon and Herman

| (Witness) History |
1 May 1834 |
It was in 1834 that Joseph Smith formed and led a paramilitary unit known as Zion's Camp on a 900-mile march from church headquarters in Ohio to western Missouri, in an attempt to restore the Missouri Mormons to the lands from which they had been driven. This trail started in Kirtland, Ohio (left May 1st), and proceeded via Akron, Mansfield, and Dayton, Ohio; Richmond, Indianapolis, and Clinton, Indiana; Paris, Decatur, Springfield and Pittsfield, Illinois; Louisiana, Moberly, and Richmond, to near Liberty, Missouri. |

That he had three children by this time is found in his daugher's autobiography. "My father and mother separated when I was 4 years old, I then went to live with my grandparents in Lima. My father had so little faith in Mormonism he wished to return to Ohio to his mother and take his 3 children with him." No indication whether the grandparents in Lima were the Stantons or not, not sure where they lived at this time. Also unknown is if he did indeed take the children for awhile or not but later implication is that he took son but not daughters.1 |

6 September 1843 |
Lucy Celesta Stanton; Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, SLC 1839548 The "card" describing says:
6 Sep 1843 Box C9 Case 294 Divorce
Bassett, Harmon (c)
Bassett, Lucy Ann (d)
and has the following (w)
Crandall, Sally
Cook, Warren
Graham, Carter
Whitney, Mr (the carpenter)
Next is the envelope cover that has their names and Divorce and Disposed of September Term 1843.
Next is the notice to the sheriff to summom the 4 witnesses.
Next is the actual Subpoena. On the side of it is "This ____ is returned without service by order of the Plaintiff"
And that's it. The implication is that he started to file for divorce but changed his mind. But his daughter's autobiography states that they split up when she was about 4, so who knows if the divorce actual took place. Since there is so little info, I did not copy the pages. |
