| Mother | Sarah (__________) b. 19 February 1750, d. before 1802 |
| Birth | circa 1790 | Frederick Co., Virginia, I think there is a problem with Stephen's age. On his death certificate, it says he was 80 years old when he died 24 June 1870, which would make his birth year 1790. Supporting this birth year is the fact that there were two land transactions in Frederick Co where he sold his inherited part of his father's land, selling land in 1816 and in 1819. If he were a minor, he could not have sold the land. So, in 1816 he had to be at least 21 years old. Why the census records for 1850 and 1840 show him as 50 and 30 to 40 respectively I don't know. What do you think????? |

Marr 3 (Mary ___) from after 1833 to before 1850. There has to be this other marriage since he didn't marry Elvira til after 1850 census and he had son James in 1840. Marr 4 (Elvira Rinehart) marr after 1850 when she is with her parents in the census. Two male children born 1830-1835 could be either Margaret's or the unknown Mary. Also need to check for further children between James 1840 and John in 1855, though more practically before 1850 census. There is no record so far that there was another marriage between Margaret and Elvira, and although Mary could have been a name for Margaret, Margaret couldn't have been his mother since she died in 1833. | |

Hamilton, Franklin Co PA - Martin Reinhart 1m0-5 1m5-10 1m70-80 1f5-10 2f10-15 1f30-40 - Could Martin (70-80) have gone to a daughter or daughterinlaw (1f30-40) who was recently widowed and left with young children? Another Martin, who is closer to Butler county, across the line in Franklin Co IN, is obviously too young to be right Martin - Martin Rhineheart as he's only 30-40. The furthest is also to young, Martin Rhinehart in Rose, Wayne, New York and only 40-50 |

| Story | The Case For Martin Being Frederick's Father. Since we have no direct proof that Frederick Rhinehart is the son of Martin Rhinehart, we must rely on circumstantial evidence. I have been convinced that Frederick is Martin's son, and will use the following to hopefully lead you to the same conclusion. Exhibit one is our Family Reunion Bible page. When referring to it I will use the initials FRB. Exhibit two is the Glenna James Mosgrove book. References to it will be GJM. The "history" in this FRB is, of course, subject to error as it was written down by Jacob and Julia's grandchildren in 1957, over 150 years after the fact. Therefore we can look at the information with the knowledge that errors have probably crept in. For the sake of argument, let us assume that Martin Rinehart of GJM is the father of our Frederick Rhinehart and compare our "tradition" with info on Martin. FRB has Jacob born "near the Monegahala and Susquehanna Rivers". These two rivers do NOT intersect, nor do they come very close to each other. However, Martin and his children were in Mahoney Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania; and a map of Northumberland County shows Lower Mahoney is at the intersection of the Susquehanna River and Mahantango Creek. It is very easy to see how, in 150 years, the strange name of Mahantango could have become Monegahala which is a more familiar name. FRB has Frederick born "of German parents". Well, this is logical anyway because Rhinehart is a German name. Martin has records showing him with the more "German spelling" of REInhart and with his parents being definitely German he could very easily fill the bill of being one of Frederick's "German parents". GJM shows nothing on Martin's wife so we don't know about Frederick's possible mother. FRB has Frederick married to Catherine Burl. There was a Berl family in Northumberland County in the 1790 census, that I believe to be Catherine's family. See her data for why that conclusion. Even though Martin moved to Butler County Ohio in 1808, and Frederick didn't until 1830, he is still a possible son because another son, George, did not move until after 1822. Since one son moved so long after the father, why not another? Martin's children, according to GJM, were born 1784, 1786, 1790, and 1792. Frederick was born 1788 which would fit in great with the two year pattern that was "the norm" at that time period. Our only known children of Frederick are Jacob, born 1815, and Catherine, born 1821. However, logic tells us there were more children. In the 1830 census for Northumberland County Pennsylvania is a Frederick with children that (agewise) could include Jacob and Catherine. The 1840 census does not show that particular family in the same county, BUT, the 1840 census for Fairfield Township, Butler County, Ohio shows a Frederick with children of the same sexes and ages (10 years older of course). This particular Frederick's family was not there in the 1830 census. There is one negative with this: the oldest female age doesn't quite match for the 1830 census, showing 30-39 when Catherine would have been 43. However the 1840 census for the presumed "same" family DOES match showing the oldest female age 50-59 which would be correct. There were many errors in the census so I can accept this being an error. Added to all of this is the popularity of the name Frederick in Martin's family AND the fact that Martin's family and Frederick's family, both from Pennsylvania, are not only in the same county, but the same township, I think the circumstantial evidence is pretty strong. There is a researcher's comment on one page about pigeonholing all of Martin's descendants. Although the researcher had all the people attributed to two of Martin's son's, it is obvious that they should be attributed to three son's instead. Martin Rinehart's Revolutionary War Pension Record. This is the "translation" of Martin's pension. Martin Rienhart of Butler in the State of Ohio who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Clark of the Regt [regiment] commanded by Col. Hunter in the Pennsylvania line for 1 year from 1779. The balance of this one tells us that he got $40 per year starting 4 Mar 1831, that the pension was issued 27 Oct 1832 and sent to John Reiley of Hamilton [Butler County] Ohio [Reiley was the county clerk]. There was an arrears of $60 and his allowance of $20 up to March of 1833, he got $80. The next page is like a recap of the declaration. The declaration was made before a court when he was 73 years of age. He was drafted on 12 May 1779 for 2 months as a private. Then again Jul 1779 for 2 more months as a private. Next was March 1780 for 6 months as an Indian Spy. Lastly in 1781 for 2 months as a substitute for Jacob Findley. He resided in Northumberland County Pennsylvania when he entered the service and his statement was supported by traditionary evidence. These transcriptions have the spelling fixed and a tiny bit of editing for clarity. If in doubt, compare for yourself. The State of Ohio Butler County Court of Common Pleas of the term of 12 Jul 1832. On this 30th day of July in the year of our Lord 1832 personally appeared before the honorable the judges of the court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Butler and State of Ohio, Martin Rhinehart aged 73 years, a resident of the County of Butler aforesaid, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth upon his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed 17 Jun 1832, that on the 1st of May 1779 he was drafted into the Militia Company commanded by Captain Foster of Colonel Kelly's Regiment in General Potter's Brigade at Buffalo Township in the County of Northumberland Pennsylvania under whom he served for the term of two months. Deponent performed duty with scouting parties in skirmishes with the Indians on the frontiers. After the expiration of the 2 months service for which he was drafted under Captain Foster , deponent was again drafted in July of the same year for a like period of 2 months under Captain Watson of the same Regiment, of which John Clark was now Colonel, Vice Colonel Kelly, during which period deponent was engaged as in the first term of his service above mentioned. About the 1st of July, deponent states that Captain Watson was killed being fired upon by a scout of Indians and receiving a ball in his abdomen, of which wound he died on the evening of the same day. On the expiration of his second term of service under Captain Watson, deponent was disengaged until the beginning of March 1780 when he volunteered as an Indian Spy under Captain Matthew Wilson who served as Pilot for the scout of spies to which deponent was attached. Deponent states that he served in this capacity as Indian Spy for a term of about 6 months, during which period deponent was to have received the common wages allowed for militia service and the extra payment of a half crown per day. But deponent avers that he neither received the common allowance nor the extra payment promised for the discharge of his duty, Colonel Hunter, Lieutenant of Northumberland, being out of funds, or otherwise indisposed to pay the same. In the year following, 1781, deponent entered a company of Lancaster militia under Captain Harklerider, as a substitute for Jacob Findly; the other officers names forgotten. Deponent served under Captain Harklerider as aforesaid for 2 months from whom deponent received a written discharge which he has since lost. Deponent served during the periods above mentioned, 1 year. Deponent has no written record of his age, but says he was born on the 12th of January 1759 in Berks County Pennsylvania. Deponent has lived in Butler County State of Ohio 24 years, to which he removed from Northumberland County Pennsylvania. Deponent knows of no witnesses living by whom he can prove his services but is well known by John Sutherland, James Boals, Matthew McClung and other inhabitants of Butler County by whom he can prove his character for truth and veracity and his reputation as a solder of the Revolution. He hereby relinquishes his every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. [Martin's signature] Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid - John Reily, Clerk. We, Francis Monfort a clergyman, and residing in the County of Butler aforesaid, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Martin Rinehart who has subscribed and sworn to the foregoing declaration, that we believe him to be 74 years of age or about that age and that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and we concur in that opinion. [Francis Monfort's signature] Sworn to & subscribed in open court 31 Jul 1832 - John Reily Clerk. I, Matthew McClung, a resident of Butler County in the state of Ohio, hereby certify that I am well acquainted with Martin Rinehart who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration during the revolutionary war. I know that said Rinehart resided in the County of Northumberland during the time of the revolution in the same town that in which I resided and I have good reason to believe that said Rinehart was a soldier during the revolutionary war. Deponent knowing that said Rinehart was in the Regiment commanded by Col Clark and he believes that said Rinehart is of the year of 73 or 74 years. [Matthew McClung's signature] Sworn to & subscribed in open court 31 Jul 1832 - John Reily Clerk. The clerk, John Reily, then states that everybody is a resident and that their statements are credible. |

He was born in 1752 and married in 1776. I have located 4 children John, Thomas, both of whom came back to Pendleton Co for a time. Elizabeth, Isaac. Now he could have had a William as he had a brother William. The last Pendleton record for him is the tax list in 1789 and then he disappears. | Sources | Further info on pg 159 of Weekley Papers. Also, this is in the Tinder MyFamily files on the internet. By David T. Bunton - Dec 20, 2000 Lucinda A. "Lucy" Tinder, daughter of Rev. James Tinder and Tabitha Redding, was born between 1815 and 1818 depending on how she reported her age in the varying censuses. She first married Alfred Bunton (note the spelling) on 17 Oct 1836 Jackson County, Indiana; after Alfred Bunton's death in 1845, she married Jonathan Tullis in 1847; after his death she married Benjamin Mosely in 1856; and then Alvin Purdy in 1878, who apparently died soon as she is listed as Lucy Baker in the 1880 Butler Co, Mo census. I descend from Lucinda Tinder and Alfred Bunton's son John Tinder Bunton, my great-great-grandfather. According to a family story, Rev James Tinder wanted his family Bible and the Tinder family record to go to one of his sons after his death. This Bible recorded information on his parents and further back on the Tinder lineage, proving many questions for current Tinder research. Lucinda asked her husband (Jonathan Tulllis) and her son John Tinder Bunton to go to her fathers house and transcribe (Jonathan) the very old history of the Tinder immigration to America from the Bible. This was while her father Rev James Tinder was living. It is thought that the early Tinder history kept by Rev James Tinder was supposed to go to either his son Asa or Elijah K, but they both died before their father, so it is possible that Elijah or Asa's children could not collect it, and it went to William Jefferson Tinder or Timothy P. Tinder. (The story is that after Rev James death, a grandchild tried to claim it on his fathers behalf, but James widow was influenced by a living son of Rev. James; however we don't know which relative got the Bible. There were no hard feelings between family members it seems and the matter was easily settled, but we don't know which branch got the very early Tinder history). But that leaves us with the transcript written by Lucinda Tinder Bunton Tullis' husband. An interesting anecdote is that as Jonathan Tullis was writing the account in a new large Bible which he had bought from monies from his wife's deceased husband Alfred Bunton, Rev. James Tinder wanted extra things put in...so Tullis added anecdotes about when and how the Tinder family immigrated to America and their time in the Revolutionary War, and spiritual experiences. There is a description of a very valuable Bible with much early history in the John Tinder Bunton family, burning in a granddaughters house in the 1930's, but so far no one can ascertain if it was from this line, or just another family Bible, which could be from another family, the Reed or Rains (related to the granddaughter). So the end result is that there is a very early history, which has Bunton, Tinder, and other family info in it, among some of Lucinda's descendants or the two sons of Alfred by his first wife. Their names were Francis Marion Bunton, who stayed in Jackson Co, Indiana, and George Bunton, who went to Missouri. | Birth | 1 March 1744 | Blessenbach, Hessen, Germany, 502441N0081806E, His marriage record in Runkel states he is from Blessenbach. The Blessenbach register for the years 1742-1764 is missing, and it is assumed that his birth/Christening would be in it. His marriage record gives his father as Johan Henrich and there is only one man of that name in Blessenbach in that time period, and that man has children in a previous register from 1727-1740 so it is reasonable that Adam's birth would be recorded in the missing register - possibly with other siblings born after 1740. |

| Military | 1776 | Chester Co., Pennsylvania, The book West Virginians in The Revolution, page 19 says: "Ash, Adam - Born in Germany in 1744, or in Holland: died May 1, 1819. Enlisted in 1776 in Captain Parker's company of Chester County, PA, militia, and again in 1781, in Captain George Enslo's company (sic, s/b Enslow), Bedford County, PA militia. Probably married in Germany to Catherine Yost. Resided in Harrison County, VA after the Revolution. The children were Adam, Jr, Glovers Gap; John, Tyler County; Peter, Harrison County." Two issues - 1) I don't know why the other children were not listed. Need to check date of book and the death dates of the other children. Maybe these were the only children living at the time. 2) While the 1781 information is correct, the book is in error about the 1776 Chester Co PA man being our Adam. There is a different Ash/Esch family in Chester County, and ours was never there. |
| Residence | 1784 | Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, In "Bedford County, Pennsylvania 1779 Tax List and 1784 Census": "Henry Ash, Bethel Township (1784 Census) - 75 acres, 1 dwelling, 11 whites" This is probably the elder Henry. He would be about 44, and the younger Henry would be 24, too young for 10 or 11 children. There is no other evidence that the elder Henry lived in Bedford County, although many of the Revolutionary war veterans settled in Bedford County after the war. Adam Ash, listed in the same township, with one dwelling, 8 whites, 150 acres, 3 horses and 5 cattle. Adam Ash from Bedford County served in the war in the Maryland Militia. Adam and Henry purchased 200 acres together in Bedford County November 4, 1789. Part of the confusion may have involved the Mason-Dixon line. Though the land between Pennsylvania and Maryland was settled by Mason and Dixon earlier, the boundaries were not completely implemented until after the Revolutionary War. |

| Deed | 4 November 1789 | Bethel Township, Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, In Bedford Archives Volume 4, page 4: Original Warrants, Patents and Drafts filed at the Fulton County Courthouse, McConnellsburg, Bethel Township, Ash, Adam and Henry. The contents are as follows (warrant #87): "Whereas Henry Ash and Adam Ash of the County of [not filled in] hath requested to take up two hundred acres of land, including an improvement adjoining George Hoopingarner* on the south, Wm. Layton on the east, Adam Smith on the North and John Whipkies Estate on the west in Bethel Township in the County of Bedford (provided the land is not within the sast purchase made of the Indians) for which he agrees to pay, immediately, into the office of the Receiver General, for the use of this State, at the rate of Ten Pounds per hundred acres, in gold, silver, paper money of this State, or certificates; agreeable to an act of Assembly, passed the first day of April, 1784: Interest to commence from the first day of October 1779. These are, therefore, to authorize and require you to survey, or cause to be surveyed, unto the said Henry Ash and Adam Ash at the place aforesaid, according to the method of Townships appointed, the said quantity of acres, if not already surveyed, or appropriated, and to make return thereof into the Secretary's Office, in order for confirmation; for which this shall be your Warrant. In witness whereof his Excellency Thomas Mifflin, Esq., President of the Supreme Executive Council, hath hereunto set his hand, and caused the left Seal of the Said Commonwealth to be affixed, the fourth Day of November in the Year 1789." [Kathryn's Evd 161] - On reverse of document it says "Ret 9 Mar 1848". I also made notes from backup documents regarding this land [Evd 661]. "Color" only, doesn't provide any further information. Need to check out these neighbors. *There is a George Hopengartner who arrived 2 Nov 1752 on Phoenix from Rotterdam last from Portsmouth. |
| Census1790 | 1790 | Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, (Evd 136) shows Adam Ash with one male over 16, five males under 16, and six females. Next door is Hendrey Ash with 1 male over 16, four males under 16, and one female. This would most likely be his nephew, son of brother Henry. |
| Residence | 1798 | Christian Ash; Harrison Co., West Virginia, Tax lists [Evd 135] - Three lists for Benjamin Bartlett's district in Harrison County (West) Virginia. 1798 shows Adam Ash-3, Christian Ash with no number. 1799 shows the same information. | Deed | 11 February 1801 | Bethel Township, Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, [Land sold] - This indenture made this eleventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundren and one and twenty fifthe of Americas Independance between Adam Ash of Harrison County and Commonwealth of Virginia on the one part and Jacob Coffman of the County of Washington and state of Maryland of the other part. Witnesseth the said Adam Ash for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds currant money of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to him in hand paid by the said Jacob Coffman, the receipt... [leaving out some of it] certain tract of land situated on the waters of Tonolway Creek in Wips Cove in Bethel Township Bedford County of Commonweath of Pennsylvania being a part of a larger tract called White Oaks Bottom containing 299 acres and 60 percent and allowance of 6 percents... [then repeats much of the info in deed when bought]. Witnesses by Andrew Mann Jr and Joseph Mann and Adam's wife is not mentioned.4 |
| Deed | 21 July 1806 | Harrison Co., West Virginia, There are several land entries in the grantor & grantee indexes [Evd 1011] in Harrison County, but the most important to me is in Deed book 6 page 166 dated 21 Jul 1806 [Evd 1012]. At some point in time, the originals of the early deed books were transcribed into typescript and then destroyed, which is a shame because it might have given us an original signature to compare with a passenger list signature. But there is an important clue where the "signature" is. Underneath the name Adam Ash is the phrase "Wrote in Duch." Duch would be the mis-spelling of Deutch which means German. |
| Death | 1 May 1819 | Gregory's Run, Harrison Co., West Virginia |
| Burial | Private Property, Gregory's Run, Harrison Co., West Virginia, Tombstone says: Adam Ash Died May 1, 1819 Aged 75 Yrs 2 Ms. In Oct 1999 the owners of property were Robert & Ruth Flanigan. The mailing address of property is RR4 Box 278-A, Clarksburg WV 26301 phone 304-783-5128. Harold Davisson, who lives in brick house just south of where Adam is buried, is the relative who put up a modern tombstone (I don't have a picture of that, but it erroneously says Adam is Scotch-Irish). The modern tombstone says: 1744 Adam Ash 1819 Rev. soldier, cam from Penn. with family in 1793. 1st settler on Gregory's Run. Owned all land from head to near Ten Mile Creek, 1000+ acres. Scotch-Irish decent. Embarked to America from Amsterdam, Holland, 1770. 1st son Christopher was born during the voyage. Submitted by descendant Harold Jr. Davisson 1986. Map1 RR4 is Gregory's Run, and on this map is shown also as Bean Run. The map is sideways so you can print it and get the whole thing. Map2 I don't remember just how far north on Gregory's Run it is, but the next pictures should help. House across street from the entrance. The mailboxes showing the Box number across street. The entrance itself actually goes up to the residence of the owners. Traditionally, the owners have not minded people visiting the gravesite. It is actually on that hill that is above the car, but it's a steep climb that way, and you are better off going up the driveway and coming from the other direction. Photo from a book circa 1987, when it was in better condition. 1981 Sitting next to Catherine's stone, I'm looking at Adam's stone where it has fallen. 1981 Closer up shot. 1981 Top 1981 Middle | |

I have the whole appraisement as well [Evd 160], but this part proves the heirs, (including that Christopher was also known as Christian), so I separated it out as a separate source. | Source | Book - The George Morris Family of Ten Mile, With Genealogical Charts For Other Affiliated Families, A Story of The Pioneer Families of The Ten Mile Valley In Harrison County West Virginia by Ollie B Morris and Eva Ruth Morris copyright 1967. [my Evd 180] On page 294 there is a "diagram of the Adam Ash line of descent", and on page 111 are excellent pictures of Adam & Catherine's tombstones. On page 314 there are photos of Adam's son Peter (and his wife Catherine Wigner), and of Isaac P.R. Ash who was the son of Peter. Isaac's picture caption says that he is the "grandfather of Belva Swiger Ritter, the great grandfather of Elizabeth Swiger Meredith and of Meredith Price Wiswell, Huntington attorney. This is the branch of the Ash family which has the Lutheran Hymnal brought to America by Adam Ash and Catherine Yost Ash from Germany or Holland." In the late 1980's, I talked with Meredith Wiswell [RN 7118, Code 96.8(10)311] about the Lutheran Hymnal [or prayer book] that had been passed down in his branch of the family. He said that the printing date on the hymnal was in the 1500's and that it is in German (no family info, just the book). He was unwilling to open it up and take a photograph of it, or get the exact date. [He said he has it all wrapped up in plastic; which, of course, is archivally detrimental, but there is nothing I can do about it.] But, the point is, that it is in German. |

| Birth | 23 September 1760 | New Castle Co., Delaware, My son Isaac was born the 23rd of Sept. 17601 |
| Residence | Raised in Pennsylvania (suspect?) | |
| Military | Served in Rev War from Delaware (There is no pension for him or widow) | |
| CAUTION | Isaac Underwood (ca 1775 - 1862); It is not proven that Isaac (ca 1775 - 1862) is the son of Isaac (1760 DE - ca 1795 KY). There is an age discrepancy so that one wonders if the man born in 1760 would have a child at 15. We don't know exactly when the latter was born, but since he had a child in 1796, it is likely he was born 1776 or so. | |
