Gregory's Run, outside Clarksburg, Harrison Co., West Virginia, Coonrod's cabin is still standing on Gregory's Run. Coonrod's son was Conrad Helem, his son was Clarence Warden, and his son was Rev. Clyde Warren. Helen, wife of Rev Clyde Warren Ash was still living there when I visited with her for a couple hours (wish I'd thought of a tape recorder). I first visited in 1981 (Clyde died in 1979), my second trip to WV. We exchanged Christmas cards for a few years, but I'm not sure just when she died. How I found out about the cabin and Helen, was because my mother and I were trying to find the cemetery, and were stopping at a couple houses along the way to ask. I can't remember the sequence of who steered us to the cemetery etc, but the visit eventually led us across the street from the cemetery, to a conversation with a very old man. The old man is the one who told us about Helen and Coonrod's cabin. After I told him who I was and what I was doing, he also amazed me by saying "I remember when I was a boy and they tore down the cabin that was built by Adam Ash. It had 4x4 rafters, and I made a bunch of canes from those rafters. Want one?" Containing my extreme joy, I said yes, I'd very much like one, and so I can say "I have a cane made from the rafters of my GGGG Grandfather's house". I believe it was after that, that he told me about Helen. Cousin Danny Jenkins (on researchers list) visited the cabin in 2000, and took some pictures. Click on the link to see them. Blue River Chapel Cemetery, Near Morristown, Shelby Co., Indiana, Tombstone says age 57y 9m 25d - The cemetery is located near present-day (November 2002) Morristown, IN. From US Highway 52 in Morristown, turn south on S. Washington St (Post Office is on the corner). This street turns into N. Morristown Road. Go south until a four-way stop is reached at County Road 625N. Go east (left) until the road makes a Y at County Road 400E. The cemetery is located on the west side of County Road 400E. Also, going north from Shelbyville, take Highway 9 and go east up the Morristown Pike to 400E. The gravesite and one other is located in the last row to the left of a huge evergreen type tree and facing a little creek. Jacob's stone has a corner broken off. Elizabeth Ash wife of James Washington Ash, son of Jacob, is buried in this cemetery and quite possibly James Washington Ash. Since there is much confusion with several cemeteries using the name "Blue River" there is another cemetery located very close to this one. From the above instructions go to the intersection of County Roads 600N and 500E. Go south on County Road 500E until a red brick church on the south side of the road is located. The Blue River Chapel Baptist Cemetery is located across the road from the church. |

AMASCASH3@aol.com - Read your article about an Ash in the Civil War that had his eye poked out and filled with sand, do you remember ? I would like to know his name, if you have it. The piece was from a story told to you by some woman back in 1984. Just found out that James W. Ash filed for pension for being in Confederate Army of Virginia from July 1, 1861. When I sent for any service records back in 1980s they could not find any. Do you have anything on this? His brother John might have been the one captured and had his eye poked out since he was a prisoner held at a Union Prison outside Columbus, Ohio, and died in 1868. Could he have been the one that was sabotaging the B.+O. Railroad since my notes claim that he and three of his brothers left Indiana to go back to Virginia once they reached manhood. The four were John, James W., Issac. and Eli D. C. all sons of Jacob and Isabella Marsh Ash. James and Eli D.C. headed back to Indiana soon after the Civil War started but Issac and John stayed. Maybe James W. was a deserter? Can you shine any light on this subject.
I believe that the Ash was John G. E. Ash married to Dorcas Glover in Arvil's book. He worked for the B+O Railroad and did serve in a Union Prison Camp near Columbus, Ohio. Did any of his descendants ever tell of John having only one eye? His father was my Jacob Ash that moved to Shelby Co., Ind. in 1835 |

Sancho Run, Tyler Co., West Virginia, Some source had this as John's death. That source may have been Arvil Ash research or any other of my old original stuff, or even Tetrick papers. But since he's on the 1850 census, it's obviously wrong. Wonder how someone got this idea? |

He made his settlement in 1775 on 350 acres adjoining lands of John Simpson, and was granted a preemption right to 1000 acres adjoining. Allen and his son, Barnes Allen, came from Scotland to VA, emigrated to Ft Pitt (now Pittsburgh) PA and moved from that point to what is now known as Hepzibah, a town located on federal highway #19 five miles north of Clarksburg. He died prior to 21 Nov 1810 because that's when his son Barnes was appointed administrator of his personal estate.1 |

In his application for a pension, made 14 Dec 1833, while a resident of Coon's run, Harrison Co, John Swiger stated that he resided in Fayetter Co PA from the time he was 18 years old until the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. He was alowed a pension for service as an Inidan spy in PA during the war, but upon examination of his claim by the United States attorney, 21 Nov 1834, he stated that he served only short tours against Indians in Jackson's fort, Greene Co PA, after the Revolution, and his name was, therefore, dropped from the pension roll 13 Mar 1835.1 |
