Besides the one for 10 May 1932, there are also certificates for 8 Nov 1932, 12 May 1936, 3 Nov 1936. We also have the Nov 1932 "Board of Canvassers' Certificate of Votes Cast for Candidates at General Election", which show that he got 990 votes, versus 926 for Fred Wallace, and 452 votes for C.C. Stewart. Tillman's daughter says that he remained as Constable until the time they moved from West Union on 2 Jul 1942 (two years into his third term). It has NOT been found in Delaware county. |

| Marriage | Susan (__________); The name Susan is shown as wife on his death certificate. There is no other evidence to indicate a marriage after Letha, so I'm inclined to think that it is a mistake or that Letha was also called Susan | |

| Birth | between 1810 and 1815 | South Carolina, Age 35 in 1850 census, age 50 in 1860 census, both say born SC |
| CAUTION | Elizabeth (__________); Another potential mother for Joseph is this Elizabeth who was in Gilmer County in 1850. However, she was from North Carolina, and the other candidate mother was from South Carolina | |
| (Witness) CAUTION | Aaron Thompson, Ruth (__________); Joseph's potential parents could be this Aaron and Ruth They are old enough that it is reasonable to assume there might have been children prior to the ones shown on the 1850 census. Ruth and children are not in the same militia district, but still not that far apart. Quoting Annelise "Looking through the census info at this time, there are very few Thompsons in Gilmer coming from South Carolina at this time. I was intrigued to realize that your Joseph Thompson also came from South Carolina. I also noted that his first child was born in 1845 in Georgia, also indicating he arrived in Gilmer at approximately the same time as our family. Also that he named one of his daughters Rutha (perhaps after his mother Ruth?) All interesting parallels that make me wonder if he could be part of our family? Perhaps an older brother, newly married that moved to Gilmer the same time his parents did. Of course he wouldn't show up in the 1850 census with them since he was married."1 | |

| Negative | The 1840 census has another Thompson in Gilmer who is NOT related. Samuel J Thompson died 1860 and possibly changed name from Burk. He was born in Elizabethtown PA about 1805, then to Ashville NC. He marr Sarah Carter 1810 in Bunscomb Co NC then to Gilmer county circa 1834-37. This per conversation with Peggy McCarley who was G Grdau of Samuel thru his son James J. Gene Teague is also descended from this Samuel and confirms that Samuel J was born Burke and took on Thompson name as he was raised by them. Peggy address Rt 1 Box 182-P Blue Ridge TX 75004 phone 214-752-5090 - her Root Celler entries (30166) were: James J Thompson resided 1850 Gilmer (her grandfather), Lidia Thompson died 1875 Gilmer, and Samuel J Thompson died 1860 (g grandfather). Samuel's 1840 entry is 010001-221001. The 1880 Ellijay 105th district, Gilmer, GA pg 550 has the following:. Thompson, Sarah 70 NC VA VA. Dorcus 40 GA PA NC dau. Sarah 34 GA PA NC dau. | Military | Per Janet Ash 810 Sexton Rd Minden, LA 71055-7392 318-371-0820 (2005 address) - Abraham Ash, his mother (Mary Underwood Ash) and brother Absolom, lived in Doddridge Co WV, a border area during the Civil War. They were southern sympathizers and had sabatoged the B & O Railroad for the south. One brother was captured by Union soldiers, his eye pushed out and filled with sand. These Ashes were originally from southern Pennsylvania. At the end of the war, Abraham & Absolom moved into southern WV to escape prosecution. Janet's dad was the source for this information. He said that it might have been an uncle or cousin. And a cousin fits this next story that has a picture to back it up. Look in the index for Amos Ash, and read the story there. Amos is first cousin to Abraham and Absolom. Steve Ash AMASCASH3@aol.com believes that the one eye story belongs to John G Ash, son of Jacob Ash and Isabelle Marsh, who is 1st cousin once removed from Amos. John worked for the B+O Railroad and did serve in a Union Prison Camp near Columbus, Ohio. But since there is a picture to prove the eye story belongs to Amos, the stories were probably mixed up. Note that there is an absence of Scotch Irish names like James, Robert, Joseph, and William. A possible sister for GW would be Eliza Ann Kile who marr 9 Apr 1840 Tyler Co marr bk 1 pg 101, to Benjamin S Martin, by Geo Monroe, same minister & page as Eli Ferrell and Rachel Lewis. There is a connection with Kiles and Underwoods, but whether they are the right ones or not I don't know. Luther E Kile was exec of estate of Joseph Underwood who may be the brother of my Sarah. This Luther E Kile died 1909 appraisal in Fudiciary settlement book 7 pg 287 & 304. Probate pg 211, settlement 8-47, 9-1. His widow was Clara and kids were Zella Swiger, resided Adamston, Della (Mrs Homer) Strosnider, resided Clarksburg, and minors Charles E "Clark" resided Salem, Wayne, Edward, & Kenneth all resided Center Point, as did widow. Luther also adm of Ruth Bates estate in 1898 & exec of Hunry Cumberland in 1899. - - GW's son Andrew has a son Luther, are they the same person? Monongalia earliest Kile dates found - Stephen (1820), John (1827), James (1812) and Abraham (1816 bastardy) all in court stuff per SLC 249836. | |

| Note | James and Nancy's marriage certificate refers to him as a Junior, so it may be assumed that his father was also named James. Of course they may have just been another James Irwin in the area. Geneva Stech had this theory: "My great grandfather Mose, a brother to Alex and Julia Ann, had a son Alonzo, who was my father's father. My father was named James Ervin for his great grandfather James Ervin from Ireland. Another brother of Mose, Julia, and Alex, was George who also had a son Alonzo. So, I believe (no legal proof) that James Ervin of Ireland's father was named Alonzo Ervin, of County Cork Ireland. My grandfather was also an Alonzo." Geneva never did tell me how she got the idea that it was County Cork. I asked her about her sources many times and she alway avoided the question. She is the source for the Ervin & Harrell entries in the Huntington Co IN County History. James & Nancy's birth dates were backed into from their ages on the 1850 census. Six children (Alexander, Julia, William, Robert, Andrew, and Maryann) also had their birthdates figured this way. The other children's birthdates are estimated. The basis for estimating those dates is that on the 1820 census there were 2 boys and 2 girls and the 1830 census shows that 1 boy and 1 girl were born between 1820 and 1830. I also have the notation that James was a veteren of the 1812 war under General Harrison but I don't have down where this information came from. I have not yet been able to verify this. (Harrison was made a General in 1812, and he had charge over KY, OH, VA, & PA.) Geneva says that James came to America with his brother George when George was 16 years old. She never said why she believed this. So far I have not been able to locate them on any ships passenger lists. I have found Jameses and Georges but none traveling together. | |

Also eight acres on east side of same line and in the same corner. Also from one to three more being the residue on that side of the road after deducting thirteen and three fourth acres. To have and to hold the same forever. Witness our hands and seals this 18th day March 1854. Said land was conveyed by deed from the Finglands 6 Jan 1852 and before that time sold and paid for. Signed by Francis A Conwell and Mrs M M Conwell. Before me Ludwick Ensoninger a justice of the peace this 18th day of March 1853, Francis A Conwell and Mary M Conwell his wife acknowledged the execution of the annexed deed. Recorded July 3rd 1854 Deed Book 6 pages 387-8 deals with the same piece of land. This indenture witnesseth that Thomas Fingland, Laurel, Franklin County Indian in consideration of two hundred dollars to him paid by James Irwin the recipt wherof is hereby acknowledged do hereby grant bargain sell and convey to the said James Irwin his heirs and assigns forever... same description and more legalese... In witness whereof, the said Thomas Fingland set his hand and seal this twenty sixth day of January 1852. ... Recorded July 26th 1855. It looks as though James had bought the land from the Conwells who had bought it from Thomas Fingland and hadn't totally paid for it. This is assumed because Fingland ended up with the $200. In any case, it's all part of the same total land transaction. |

| Probate | Have probate info (Evd 275). James died prior to 19 Dec 1868 because that's Nancy's will date and she referred to James as deceased. It is possible that James died prior to 1860 as he was not on the census with Nancy that year. However it seems unlikely that they would have waited so long to assign an administrator, as was done 3 Apr 1869. But then again, it may be because Nancy had the dower right to the land, and the administrator was just delayed til her death. This seems the most probable case. Geneva said that James' will is at the courthouse in Brookville Indiana but when asked for a copy it turned out to be the probate record of the sale of land, not an actual will. Probate order book 5 page 14 Grant of Administration for Estate of James Irwin Dec'd: Be it remembered that on this 3rd day of April AD 1869, I, Samuel S Harrell, Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Franklin County Indiana (in vacation) of said County granted letters of the Administration to John H Faroute to handle and to take upon himselft the Administration of the Estate of James Irwin, late of Franklin County deceased and the said John H Faroute being executed and filed bond in and for the County, one hundred dollars with John Case as surety theron who is approved by me and the said John H Faroute having taken and subscribed an oath according to law, letters of Administration are isued to him. Probate order book 5 pages 325-327 dated fifth day of November term 1871 Friday 10. John H Faroute Administrator of James Irwin deceased or James (Ervin) vs. John Irwin, Abigal Woods, Alexander Irwin, Timothy Woods, Moses Irwin, William Irwin, Julia A Rhinehart, Jacob Rhinehart, Robert Irwin, the unknown heirs of Andrew J Irwin decd, of George Irwin deceased, Nancy Irwin, Susan Irwin, Mary Irwin, the unknown heirs of Emiline Irwin decd, the unknown heirs of Nancy Irwin deceased, Decamp Shellabarger, Samuel Jones, and the unknown heirs of Mary A Irwin decd. | Note | In the History of Rush Co IN the bio of William's descendant (Wm-1, WmB-2, WmC-3, OrinP-4) Orin P Wamsley. There is some interesting info in this that bears looking into as it is not confirmed any place else that I have seen. It says "William B. Wamsley was born in Boone county, Kentucky, son of George W. Wamsley and wife, pioneers of that county, who later came across the river and settled in Hamilton county, where George W. Wamsley was killed by a log falling upon him and crushing his head during a pioneer 'barn raising' in the neighborhood in which he lived." There have been no males by the name of George carried down in the family, so where did this come from?1 | |

| Source | Many researchers have thought his name was Christopher but the fact that it was Christian, not Christopher, is in several records. Harrison County estate settlement of Adam Ash, 9 Feb 1822 naming Christian Ash, first heir, set apart from the others. [my Evd 1419]. Tyler County Deed 10 Jul 1819, Ralph Smith to Christian Ash, 196 acres. Tyler County Appraisement Bill of Christian Ash, deceased, 21 Oct 1828 Harrison County Stray Book 1784-1847 pages 35 and 32: 29 Nov 1799 "Christian Ash...a horse to fulfill the law made and provided for strays and appraised by the subscribers Jacob Swiger, Willam Chaney, and Christopher Swiger. We find the horse to be a dark bay with blaze face...etc, signed: Jacob Swiger, William Chaney, Christopher Swiger". 29 Nov 1799 "Christopher Swiger - a bull, signed Willam Chaney, Christian (x) Ash, Jacob Siger (sic)". 18 Dec 1795 "Christian Ash - steer. Harrison County to wit: this day brought before us the subscriber a stray steer to be appraised and is being duly sworn for that purpose find the steer one year old part dark red colour a swallow fork in each ear a white end to his tail and valued to be worth three dollars before the subscribers this 18th day of December 1795 the steer brought before us by Christian Ash living on Gregory's Run ten mild waters. Jacob Loofbourman(?), Willam Chaney, Henry (x) Ash. Test Thomas Cheney J..". [ten mild water would be Ten Mile Creek] [my Evd 1420]. Above records provided by Sharon (Sprouse) Bramhall 5312 Devon Dr North Olmsted OH 44070 (216-734-7434) in 1995 correspondence (Evd 1394). I also have a memo that Christian Ash got land in Tyler Co by virtue of a Treasury warrant for 100 acres in 1810, McElroy Fork of Middleplant Creek, and that there was a sale by Christian Ash in Tyler Co Dec term 1828, bought by Jacob Ash, Isaac Underwood, Christian Swiger, Thomas Ash, Savannah Ash, and widow not named. [Evd 552]. Need to get a copy of this original record. It seems obvious that many researchers have called Christian Christopher because they were mixing him up with his cousin Christopher Swiger. | |

| CAUTION | Isaac Underwood (1760 DE - ca 1795 KY); It is not proven that Isaac (ca 1775 - 1862) is the son of Isaac (1760 DE - ca 1795 KY). There is an age discrepancy so that one wonders if the man born in 1760 would have a child at 15. We don't know exactly when the latter was born, but since he had a child in 1796, it is likely he was born 1776 or so. | |

| Probate | 26 May 1862 | Doddridge Co., West Virginia, ISAAC'S PROBATE In probate record #1 of Doddridge, 26 May 1862, there is a record that could be either Isack or Zadock. "C R Gain, Isreal J Allen, Wm Ash, Saml Ash appraisors of the estate of Isack (or Zadock) Underwood decd" is sum total of entry. I need to see if there is anything further regarding this probate. There's nothing on any of the films at SLC which seem pretty complete. The reasons I believe this is MY Isaac is that William & Samuel Ash are the names of his grandsons, and the various dates of the two Zadocks make that name not a possibility. There is an Isaac who is the brother of Mary, whose probate record is in Fiduciary book 2 pgs 215 thru 240 & pgs 547 & 548 with many of the correct names. I copied pgs 547 & 548, but not the rest which is the inventory. Some of the pertinent names who owe notes to estate are: James Ferrell, Jacob Yeater, Freeman Smith, Thomas & Barnes Swiger, Thomas Ash, Asa Kile; and the following Underwoods: David, Isaiah, S., John G., Sol (probably Solomon), Joseph, and Freeman. Lots more. Estate starts 27 Oct 1876. This paragraph is duplicated in his actual record, but included in father's record to differentiate the two Isaacs. Minute book #1 has the following entries for Isaac. First two may or may not be MY Isaac. pg 36 Dec term 1845 (copied) - he's declared a magistrate. pg 62 Jun term 1846 "To Isaac Underwood the sum of $12 for one old wolf scalp". pg 360-1 Jul term 1849 (copied) about making a road - names listed include Isaac Underwood, Thomas Ash, Adam A Ash, Stephen Ash, Israel Ash, Christopher Ash, Bainbridge Ash, & several people named Williams & Davis (and others). [Adam Ash is father of the other Ash's mentioned, and is the brother of Isaac's soninlaw]. pg 437 "also a deed of bargain and sale from Isaac Underwood & wife to Ezekial Pitts for 100 acres of land on McElroy Creek". Other things noted that I haven't identified Probate book 1 almost at end of book, tells that Nancy & Isaac Underwood are under 14, children of Ellis Underwood dec'd (but I didn't write down date) |
