Instructions on how to copy from a dos screen (ie: Family Roots) to your email message or word processor or?.

Assumptions: I will assume that you have a Family Roots icon on your desktop, that it is how you start FR, and that you are running Windows95 up. If you don't have the shortcut already made, see the tip about putting a FR shortcut on your desktop.

Start FR. Print your Family Group Sheet, or Ahnentafel, or whatever, to the monitor. As you know, it prints one screen at a time. Before you hit enter to see the next "page", do the following:

Right click on the blue "title bar" (the bar that has the FR icon, says, FR-frmain, and has the min/max/x on the right).
Choose Edit, then Mark
Highlight what you want to copy, by dragging your mouse like you would in your word processor - though the block doesn't have to go from margin to margin. If you "select" the line at the left or right, that will be included too. Everything that is in the highlighted "box" that you drag.
Next is important - you must press ENTER to put it on the clipboard, Control-C does NOT copy in this arena.
Now, switch to the window with your open email (you *have* already started your email haven't you ), and paste by normal windows means such as Control-V.
If what you are printing to screen in FR is more than one screen, then go back to the FR window, and "press any key" like it says. Then do the same copy procedure for that screen.

Experiment a few times and you'll get the hang of it in no time.

By the way, if you have a choice of how your email is sent, be sure that you are using "plain text" and not html or rich text. Plain text will keep the spacing intact with the fixed space courier font. The others will have a proportional font which will mess up alignments. I ALWAYS use plain text because you never know what kind of email your recipient can receive, and everyone can receive plain text.

For most of your printing to monitor, it will adjust and read fine. Since you have so many choices with Family Group Sheets, see which one works the best with the screen width. I designed a style of my own that lends itself to looking good on screen. Here are two samples of the same screen. One shows the whole window, and the other, I've "selected" inside the lines.
